From COP 14 to COP 15 by Li Li

I still remember the chilly wind and my tired excitement around the same time last years in Poznan. The negotiations were the almost the same—it was exciting to participate, but the talks were not making any progress. I seemed to be the only youth representative from China invited by UNFCCC. There were a lot of attention, and responsibility. I then became very engaged in all sorts of youth activities organized in many countries, met many youth leaders and learned more about the seemingly mysterious COP meetings. I felt such good opportunity should be shared by more Chinese youth.

A year has gone by. Looking back, I see the my dream of brining more youth to COP meetings gradually fledged with the help of my colleague Shane and many more. From planning to implementation, solving one problem after another, I have grown so much in so little time. And CYCAN, which I initiated, is growing rapidly with much attention as well.

In a few hours, I will set foot in COP again. Yet this time, there is less excitement, but more pressure of helping the youth delegation achieve their goals. We sail to COP with shared vision and divided tasks. COP 15 receives unprecedented attention, not just because the first commitment period of Kyoto Protocol is near expiration, but also because a new round of resource war under the “environment” and “climate” coat will start to play.

We are receiving the publicity we wanted—we want more people to know. We want those aware to act and take on responsibilities. But first, we need our youth delegates to lead the actions, fulfill their duties and responsibilities. But more importantly, I want them to find their own ways of participating in their own futures. Our future.

I am once again excited. COP 15, here I come. And yes No Other Way.
